Tailgate Lock Cylinder Replacement

What is the Tailgate Lock Cylinder all about?

The lock of your tailgate involves two main parts: the cylinder and the key. The cylinder attaches to rods inside the tailgate that operate the locking mechanisms. When the key is turned one way, the locks engage, and when turned the opposite direction, the locks are disengaged. The tailgate lock cylinder is a reassurance that your tailgate will stay closed once you shut it, and provides extra security for your belongings especially when used in tandem with a tonneau cover. If the tailgate lock cylinder is binding or seized, the key may not fully go into the cylinder, or may not turn the cylinder in one or both directions. If the tangs on the back of the cylinder that the lock rods attach to are broken, the cylinder will spin fully around without resistance.

Keep in mind:

  • If your tailgate lock isn’t working, it may be the key and not the lock that is at fault.
  • Check the tailgate handle to make sure it moves freely before replacing the tailgate lock cylinder.
