Your vehicle is equipped with an emissions-related system known as the exhaust gas recirculation, or EGR. Its purpose is to reintroduce exhaust with unburned fuel back into the engine to complete its combustion. The system is controlled by a valve that determines when to allow exhaust gases back into the intake air and how much to recirculate. This EGR valve has a position sensor that determines what position the gate is in to allow exhaust gases into the intake. This EGR valve position sensor (EVP) has a solenoid that closes the gate to prevent any exhaust gases from entering the intake. This shut off solenoid closes the gate during engine warm-up in particular so the engine can reach operating temperature easily and optimally on fresh air alone.
If the EVP shut off solenoid doesn’t close fully, the engine can experience difficulty starting or may run rough on a cold start. If the EVP solenoid doesn’t open when the engine reaches running temperature, the emissions system will not run efficiently and excessive hydrocarbons will be introduced into the atmosphere.
The EVP shut off solenoid does not require regular maintenance or servicing. If your engine light comes on or you experience an engine knock, it may be related to the EVP solenoid. Have one of our expert mechanics diagnose the concern and replace the EVP shut off solenoid if necessary.
If you are experiencing engine performance issues related to your EVP solenoid, have it replaced before additional engine damage occurs, such as burnt valves. Alternately, replace a faulty EVP shut off solenoid before a smog test.
